Share Your Story with Your Local Newspaper, Television, and Radio Outlets

Whether sharing your personal experience with Type 1 or detailing why the More For A Cure petition is a critical part of increasing cure research funding, personal stories related to people battling and making a difference in the T1D community are interesting to news outlets all over the country.

Share your story with your local newspaper, television, and radio outlets to make an impact. Here is how:

Media Advocacy:

  1. Local focus: An article or opinion piece in the local newspaper has the potential to be more impactful than the same letter in the New York Times. You are also much more likely to see your piece published in the local paper.
  2. Send copies of published articles, letters, and videos to the JDCA so that we can broadcast your message to the international T1D community.
  3. Identify and build relationships with key points of contact in all local media outlets (newspapers, television and print).
  4. Real-life experiences and passion increase the chance for your advocacy message to be heard. Sharing your story, and reasons why the petition is important to you, will increase the likelihood of it getting published or picked up.
  5. Contact the JDCA via email at champions@thejdca.org for more strategies, tips, facts and information regarding media outreach.

The JDCA provides a sample letter to the editor, op-ed, template, and press release, as well as instructions if you choose to craft your own:

  • Explain why you are signing the JDCA More for a Cure Petition and why others should sign as well
  • Describe what it was like when you or your child were first diagnosed with T1D
  • Document your experience living with diabetes—the hardships, the disadvantages, embarrassments, as well as the personal victories
  • Explain how recent changes in health insurance coverage has affected you
  • Describe the financial burden that T1D creates
  • Imagine a life without T1D. How would a cure change your life?
